Only 1667 words a day? HA!

Greetings Earthlings,

Remember a while back when I told you all about NaNoWriMo? Well, I'm behind...twenty thousand words behind, and I have T-minus two nights a counting to finish it. I am making progress though, yesterday I was thirty thousand words behind, wrote ten thousand, and that's what I plan to do tonight, so we'll see how that goes.

No time to talk to you all! MUST...WRITE!
NaNoWriMo for life!

Things That Happen: Math Class Edition

Greetings Earthlings,

Today in math class, we were learning about Geometry and all of it's boringness. Anyways, our math teacher was telling us about line segments and rays, and then he gave us textbook work. AS he was explaining it, he said, so here is Ray UP and Ray PU. To which everyone in the class bursted out into laughter...Including our teacher.

Get why? Ray PU? RayP U? Haha?

Anyways, inappropriate and still hilarious joke of the day. Hope it made you laugh too!

PS: I can not be taken responsible for the inappropriateness of the joke.

FREEDOM!

Greetings Earthlings,

I'msorryI'msorryI'msorryI'msorry. I haven't posted in a while (like two days) but the last one didn't count, it was one line, I think. So, you know. But I have a life, I'm a busy person. Who cares if I spend most of my time lazing around my freaking house in pajamas watching re-runs of Bones and talking to people on social-networking sites? That's a life! ...right?

Alright, so today I wanted to talk to you guys about something making my life infinitely better, lack of Facebook! That's right everyone...I QUIT! HOORAY!

I'm going to have a little heart-to-heart with you all right now, I'm going through that stage of my life where, let's be honest, I'm about to start having those-times-of-the-month, and I really can't control my hormones. I feel insecure about my body and angry at people who are only trying to help me, generally I just feel like crap. And so when I told my mom about this, she suggested to me I quit some of my nasty habits in order to work on my health. And so I took a stand and deactivated Facebook.

Upon deactivating your account, Facebook actually brings you to this page in which it shows pictures you were tagged in with other people, for the sake of this post we'll say it showed a picture of me and my friend Emma, and over the picture will be a caption that says "Emma will miss you". There are at least five pictures like this. Once you skip that page it's a page asking you why you're quitting, and then it finally lets you deactivate. I noticed Facebook was really hostile about this, as if they were sing everything in their power to convince you to stay. It really only made me want to go more.

The first night after I deactivated. I noticed my computer time must have cut down by at least an hour. I occurred to me that although I wouldn't just sit on Facebook for an hour at a time, when I was bored I would say to myself "What's happening on Facebook?". Even if I was only on around ten minutes each time, only six visits and I was at an hour, it kept building up. Now, I feel as if I have a lot more time to spend doing more productive things (like blogging!)

I've also noticed that no one even cares I deactivated. I had over two hundred friends on my Facebook account, and yet not one of them mentioned to me they noticed I had left, or even asked me about it. It really shows you how even though people are your "friends" on Facebook, it doesn't mean they necessarily care about you in real life.

I had had Facebook for around two years, and after a while, it kind of started becoming part of y everyday routine, Get home, homework, food, Facebook. I didn't even think twice about logging in and searching people I haven't seen in years. I think like coffee or tobacco, it's addictive. People get hooked and can't stop. When they want to deactivate, they say things like "Oh people will miss me" or "I won't be able to talk to that guy I knew from kindergarten". But in truth, no one will even notice. It's funny, actually.

Anyways, there's my two cents worth on the cons of Facebook. Maybe after reading this you'll realise it's basically just controlling your life like I did. No, I feel a lot less pressure and freedom from Chat boxes with relatives you haven't seen in a while. I feel a lot less pressure and I'm loving it :)

Interrup-HI!-tions 2.0

Greetings Earthlings,

Thought you'd all enjoy this picture

Why do I feel as if I'm going to regret posting this?

M.I.T...fun times :D

Greetings Earthlings,

So yesterday my friend Emma left our home town to go to Boston for the weekend so she can participate in this year's M.I.T Splash program, unfortunately I couldn't go, but I figured I would tell you guys a little but about my experience from last year.

For starters, Splash is a program that runs every year  for high school and middle school students at M.I.T. All the classes are taught by M.I.T undergraduates which is pretty sweet. And basically you go online and you pick your classes, which vary between things like "How to survive a zombie apocalypse" to "Canada, and why you shouldn't live there". Then, you bring something like twenty bucks and you spend a whole weekend taking courses about awesome things, it's great.

So last year, Emma and I drove seven hours and ended up at Splash M.I.T. We got there in the morning and waited in line for a bit before getting into M.I.T and beginning our courses. If I had my schedule still, I would definitely share it with you, but I don't, because like I said, this was a year ago. But anyways, I took some classes on data management (because I'm a nerd) and other pretty lame subjects, but one stood out in particular for me, so bad, I actually snuck out.

So, the class was called "Who wants to be millionaire?" and Emma convinced to take it with her. I assumed  it was going to be some sort of talk show kind of deal, so I was pretty excited, but was I ever wrong. Turns out the class was about the seven unsolved math questions of history, and if they were solved, the reward was a million dollars. The class was literally two hours of the guy writing out each math question (they were LONG) and explaining to us why they we're unsolvable. It was torture, and after an hour, I knew I had to escape. I literally wrote Emma a not saying meet me at lunch, got up, said I was double booked for another class and had to go, and got the heck out of there. I RAN out of that room. So that was to worst class I took.

Don't be put off by that story though, there are a lot of awesome classes at M.I.T. I took one called "Canada, and why you shouldn't live there" which was highly amusing for me since I am Canadian. The class was three M.I.T students explaining why Canada was horrible, then they had a quiz about Canada (all the answers were false. One of the questions was "What is the capital of Canada?" and the answer was supposedly "Beerville") and the winners got to pick a prize of a stuffed beaver, a Canadian toonie, or maple syrup. At the end, people were appauled to discover I was Canadian, but I got a real kick out of it.

Once, when I was trying to find my "Introduction to Chinese Art History" class, I stumbled upon this beautiful room in which the floor was covers in mosaic floor tiles that reflected onto the glass ceiling above. After I had found it, Emma and I spent a half hour trying to find it again. We thought we had given up, when we came across it a couple hours later (We hadn't been searching all that time, we weren't THAT desperate) Anyways, Emma saw the room, and wasn't nearly as impressioned as me, until a boy and a girl looking slightly older than us appeared and the boy screamed "BUTTERFLY! LOOK! IT'S THE ROOM ONLY HEARD OF IN LEGENDS!" Emma didn't really know what to so, but I just turned over to her and whispered "Told you." So yeah, that was epic.

One extremely disappointing event that happened during our experience was Emma and I were walking and happened upon a bulletin board with a sign reading:

ONLY FOR SPLASH STUDENTS!
The Purple Elephant is testing out a new chocolate today in room (I forget the room)
Come try some free chocolate!

Emma and I just kinda lost it at that point, and so we pranced happily to the room, only to discover there was no chocolate, it was a SCAM. So that sucked.

Anyways, M.I.T was an awesome experience, even though I almost died (Another day, children, another day) And I'm super sad I couldn't come this year D: Oh well! I hope you have an awesome time Emma! Tell me all about it! And I'll see you guys tomorrow!

Anti-Bullying Week

Greetings Earthlings,

So, if you don't already now, the past week has been Anti-Bullying Week. At my school, we spend the week taking one period out of our day each day and having an assembly on bullying. A lot of people found it stupid, but it really got me thinking.

So, if you couldn't tell by now, I'm a nerd, a hardcore, insanely crazy, dorky, geeky, bad-ass nerd. That's right people, this may come as a surprise to you (not.) but I watch My Little Pony, I spend my time doing anti-social things like blogging (i'm actually at a friends's house right now, if that helps plead my case) and I am a frequent role player. And yet I have never really be bullied. Sure, I've had the odd taunt or diss. But I can pretty much say nothing drastic in terms of bullying has ever happened.

It's not that bullying is just not relevant in my life, bullying is present at my school for sure, just this year a boy I had known since grade two left because of his constant taunts. It's frightening for me how people take their lives and stop feeling happy or included, people skip school because they're afraid. And it's horrible.

That's not to say you should stop being yourself to fit in and avoid being bullied. You have to stay strong to who you are, no matter what happens in your school years. That's what I do, I mean c'mon people, the unicorn hat, how could you insult the unicorn hat?!

Alright people that's all for tonight, sorry my post was kind of short. Leave a comment about your opinion on bullying and if you've ever been bullied, your experience. Thanks for staying awesome guys :)

The Hunger Games

Greetings Earthlings,

So, if you are anywhere near as Hunger Games obsessed as I am, you would probably know by now of yesterday's release of the Hunger Games official trailer. If you didn't know about it, well then, the official Hunger Games trailer was released yesterday.

Anyways, when I had heard it had come out, I basically soiled myself with excitement. I'm sure you can imagine me literally jumping from my seat, sprinting to my computer, and watching this trailer with a huge goofy grin on my face and literally bouncy up and down on the couch. I think my mom thought I was nearing hysteria.

Actually, watching this trailer eased a lot of my Hunger Games movie jitters. I loved Gale, I really thought they got his character right. I especially digged his vest. I also felt a lot better about Jennifer Lawrence portraying Katniss, it's a huge role to step into.

I think though, of all the characters, Effie Trinket was the best. I loved how they took characterisics of Effie, like her crazy personality and complete obliviousy and used it all in her make-up. They made her look completely Effie-esque without even including the bright, hot pink wig she's so known for. Everything down to the way she tilted her torso when calling out the tribute was perfect.

I'm still not sure about Peeta. I like the scene on the rooftop they showed, and I liked where they made him look young and innocent in the train looking out the window, but there's something about him that really doesn't seem right. He'll still have to prove himself to me.

I also thought Haymitch was weird, what was with the hair? I always thought Haymitch was supposed to be bald, not long flowing obviously fake blonde wigs. That was strange.

I really enjoyed how the trailer was focused on the events that happened before the actual Games, and not the Games itself. I think the really did a good job setting the mood for the entire movie, without giving anything of great importance away. I think the part I'm most excited for has to be the interviews. It was by far my favourite part in the books.

I really hope, for my sake and the sake of all the actors and producers of the Hunger Games movie, that this turns out well. As I'm sure a lot of you know, Hunger Games fans tend to be slightly violent.

That's all for now guys, I'll post links to the trailer and teaser trailer below for your enjoyment. More blogging soon!

NaNoWriMo?

Greetings Earthlings,

So earlier today I posted something on my blog called "YouTuber of the day: italktosnakes" In that post, I think I said something along the lines of "Kristina makes vlogs about NaNoWriMo" although I can't remember the exact quote. Anyways, it took me only a couple seconds after I posted it to realize a lot of you probably have no idea what NaNoWriMo is. Well, I'm gonna explain it to you!

NaNoWriMo is the abbreviated form of National Novel Writing Month, in which people from all over the globe struggle to write 50 000 in as much as 30 days and nights. Still confused? Alright, let's continue.

The correct pronounciation if NaNoWriMo is NaaaNoooWryyyMooo (That's me trying to sound it out for you) but people like italktosnakes (and myself) pronounce it NaaaNoooWreeMooo (According to Hayley G. Hoover it's the "Potter Fan" pronounciation). Following along? Moving on.

NaNoWriMo lasts through out the entire month of November, and in order to reach the goal of 50 000 words, you need to be able to write 1667 words each day. Which, in case you couldn't infer, is a lot. Making any more sense? Keep Following.

NaNoWriMo was founded in 1999 by Chris Baty, that year, there were only 21 participants, and last year (2010) there were over 200 000 participants, who wrote in total 2, 872, 682, 109 words. Are you comprehending? Keep reading!

Since the first year of NaNoWriMo, ten novels that were written during the of November for NaNoWriMo have been published. Including The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern and The Compound by Stephanie Stuve-Bodeen.

Okay that's all I got for ya, I hope now NaNoWriMo makes a bit more sense. This is my first year doing NaNoWriMo, so I'm almost as confused as some of you! It's a bit late to join this year, since it's almost the middle of November, but I highly recommend you try it out next year if you aren't already participating, it's a lot of work, but the pay-off is well worth it.

If you're still confused on this topic, I highly suggest you read my friend Emma's blog. She does a daily journal-like entry on her experience with NaNoWriMo. You should also check out these websites and videos:

Youtuber of the Day: italktosnakes

Greetings Earthings,

Well, today I'm stuck in bed with a cold, so I thought I would write you all a little recommendation blog about a YouTuber I enjoy: italktosnakes.

Kristina Horner, or italktosnakes, started her YouTube account on March 1st 2007, and her first video was a video response to "How has Harry Potter impacted your life?", although her videos only really started developing revenue with her 2007 Project For Awesome video, in which she and a friend, Liz, wrote notes to Nerdfighters who didn't know they were Nerdfighters, and placed them throughout novels in the library.

In 2008, Kristina started a program with four other YouTubers calles "5 Awesome Girls".  The videos revolved around Kristina, Lauren, Kayley, Hayley, and Liane. Each one of the girls was dedicated a week day and each day they would make a video on why that day is awesome. The channel ended around the beginning of 2011, and the channel has over 600 videos.

Kristina is also in a Wizard Rock band, the Parselmouths, and another band with Luke Conard, ALL CAPS. Both band are in association with DFTBA records.

Kristina makes videos at least twice a month, from things like NaNoWriMo, Wizard Rock, and Nerdfighters. To random vlogs about important happenings in her life and the occasional song. Currently, she has over 100, 000 subscribers. She also has a second channel called kristinahorner, in which she does more random vlogs about her life or less polished videos that don't end up on her main channel.

I love Kristina and her videos, I suggest you check them out too! Thanks for enduring this rant guys, I thought you'd all enjoy some recommendations :) Okay, back to cough medicine and sleep, more blogs to come!

We interrupt this broadcast for a quick message from our sponsor...

...me in a unicorn hat

Nerdfighters

Greetings Earthlings,

So, I'm guessing from my title "Unicorns, Nerdfighters, and Wizard Rock" some of you have had some speculation as to what a Nerdfighter really is. Well, ponder no further, because for today's blog, I'm going to teach you of the basic knowledge of Nerdfighteria.

The official definition of a Nerfighter, or at least what I gathered from Urban Dictionary " People who instead of being made up of cells and organs and stuff are actually made of awesome. They fight decepticons on behalf of Nerds everywhere"

Nerdfighters, despite what you might think, are not people who fight nerds, they are nerds that fight worldsuck, which is, according to Hank Green, "the amount of suck in the world". The general motto and initialism for Nerfighteria is DFTBA, which stands for Don't Forget To Be Awesome.

Some famous Nerdfighters include Hank and John Green. Hank runs the website EcoGeek and John is an author who wrote novels such as An Abundance of Catherines and Paper Towns. Other Nerdfighters who are recognisable are Charlie McDonnel, Alex Day, and Kristina Horner. Each of which are YouTubers and musicians for DFTBA records.

"Am I too young, old, fat, skinny, weird, cool, pretty, handsome, tall, dead, to be a nerdfighter?"
NOPE. In the words of John Green "If you want to be a Nerdfighter, you are a Nerdfighter."

Well, thanks for enduring that brief history of Nerfighteria, if you want to know more:

First Post! Hi!

Greetings Earthlings,

Today marks an important event in history, something that could change the course of our universe forever...that's right, folks, it's the day I started my blog!

Welcome, ladies, gentleman, and hopefully ponies, to Library of Awesome. A blog in which you, the reader, can come to explore a world of My Little Pony, NaNoWriMo, YouTube, books, movies, and so much more.

I'm really excited to be starting this blog. To be honest, I need a hobbie. Plus, I feel blogging is something I've always been meaning to do, but never actually had the chance. So here it goes! Please don't be put off by my insanity, I feel like I can be normal, occasionally. And people who know me say I'm really awesome (I think, I've never really asked them...don't go check that with any of my friends)

Okay, I'm going to stop rambling now. Enjoy my blog! More entries to come!
